What is the Encoding Specificity Principle?

The Encoding Specificity Principle is a concept which suggests that we are more likely to remember/recall information when the context in which we recall the information matches the context that we first learned it in.

When information is stored in the brain as a memory, this process is known as encoding. When we store a memory we also take in other details, including environment and physiological state.
Environment and physiological state can act as retrieval cues as they can trigger the recall of the desired memory. It is important to be aware that for a cue to be effective it must be present during encoding and retrieval.

What is a Contextual Cue?

A contextual cue is an external factor that acts as a retrieval cue, such as the environment. For example, if you learn a list of words in one room, you are more likely to recall the list of words accurately in the same room rather than in another. This can explain why people forget what they need from the supermarket. The information was likely learned at home, e.g. in the kitchen, which is a different environment from the supermarket. 

What is a State-related cue?

A state-related cue is an internal factor that acts as a retrieval cue, such as physiological state. For example, if you learn a list of words whilst relaxed, you are more likely to recall the list of words accurately in the same state rather than in a stressed state. This can explain why so many people forget during important exams. The information was learned in a relaxed state but had to be recalled in a stressed state. 

Encoding Specificity Principle Experiments

One of the most famous experiments is a study using scuba divers by Godden and Baddeley (1975). Scuba divers learned words either on land or underwater and then had to recall words in the same environment, i.e. either on land or underwater. The findings displayed how words learned in the same context were better recalled. Words learned on land were better recalled on land and words learned underwater were better recalled underwater. 

How can we Apply the Encoding Specificity Principle?

The Encoding Specificity Principle is an interesting concept, but what use does it really bring in everyday life? One of the most beneficial applications of the concept is in the field of education. Retrieval cues, i.e. contextual and state-related, can be used in a way to aid student recall and improve exam performance.

For example, strategies such as chewing a piece of gum during studying and exam periods can act as a retrieval cue. If information is learned when chewing blueberry gum, it is more likely to be recalled when chewing the same blueberry gum. This is because the flavour of the gum will be encoded together with the information that needs to be recalled.

Another technique is to use emotional regulation techniques before and during exams to ensure that stress is minimal during exams. The more relaxed an individual is, the more likely they are to recall the exam information because they likely learned the content in a relaxed state, i.e. in their bedroom.

The Encoding Specificity Principle proves that memory is complex and every time we learn something new, our brains are taking a mental picture of the entire situation. Our context/environment and state/physiology can act as triggers for a memory. Being aware of this, we can use clever techniques to optimise our memory and ensure content can be retrieved from our brains when we need it most. What is the Diathesis-stress Model?

The nature versus nurture debate is one of the oldest and most fierce arguments in the field of Psychology. The nature side of the debate argues that behaviour is innate, e.g. inherited via genes, whilst the nurture side suggests that behaviour is learned via experiences and environment. Each side of the argument has their strengths, however they also have significant flaws. As a result, the interactionist approach has been developed to provide a more nuanced explanation of human behaviour. The interactionist approach promotes the idea that the nature and nurture sides of the debate interact together to form behavioural responses. At the heart of the interactionist explanation lies the Diathesis-stress Model. This post will briefly explain how the Diathesis-stress Model works, along with a real-world example to strengthen your understanding of the concept. 


What is the Diathesis-stress Model?


The Diathesis-stress Model refers to the idea that behaviour, e.g. psychological disorders, are due to the interaction of an underlying vulnerability and external stressors. 


To better understand the Diathesis-stress Model, the term needs to be split into two. Firstly, the term “diathesis” comes from the Greek term for a predisposition. A predisposition results in an increased possibility of a behaviour coming to the surface, e.g. aggression. The main reason for a predisposition is usually related to a genetic variation in one or more genes, which increases susceptibility to behave in a certain way. On the other hand, a predisposition can also be psychological. For example, cognitive distortions and negative thinking patterns. 


The term “stress” refers to a life event or series of events that may act as a catalyst for the development of a specific disorder/behaviour, e.g. an abusive childhood. An individual’s diathesis/predisposition interacts with environmental stressors, resulting in behavioural outcomes. It is important to be aware that a diathesis/predisposition may never actually come to light if specific environmental factors are not present. Hence, a diathesis/predisposition does not guarantee specific behaviours within individuals. 


The simplest way to understand the Diathesis-stress Model is the popular “Bucket” analogy. The person's diathesis can be compared to a bucket. A person born with a predisposition will have less room in their bucket, subsequently a bucket with a larger amount of space will indicate low vulnerability. Stress can be viewed as water being poured into the bucket. A behaviour such as a mental health issue, occurs when water overflows the rim of the bucket. A person with a diathesis is more likely to run out of bucket space earlier, resulting in a higher chance of developing the behaviour.


Where is the Diathesis-stress Model useful?


The Diathesis-stress Model is highly relevant in the field of psychopathology, which is the scientific study of mental disorders. The Diathesis-stress Model is particularly useful in this field of psychopathology as it allows researchers to observe the interaction between nature (diathesis) and nurture (stress) in terms of developing mental illnesses. The Diathesis-stress Model is highly useful in determining who is likely to develop a disorder and who is not, based on their genetic vulnerabilities and external stressors.


In psychopathology the Diathesis-stress Model is a great way to explain why one individual might have obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), whilst the other individual does not, even after being exposed to similar external stressors. A different diathesis/predisposition, e.g. a specific genetic variation, will influence how stress impacts behaviour. In addition, the Diathesis-stress Model is a great way to identify individuals who are at risk of developing mental illnesses. For example, a child from a family with a history of OCD is more likely to be susceptible to the illness.


Example of the Diathesis-stress Model


A great study to show how the Diathesis-stress Model works in the real-world is research by Caspi et al. (2002). Psychologists during this period were already certain that childhood abuse increases the risk of being aggressive/violent in adulthood. However, psychologists could not explain why some children who suffer from poor childhoods do not go on to display antisocial behaviour into adulthood. Caspi wanted to know if genetics play a key role in resilience to abusive treatment?


Caspi’s study used a large sample of male children who were followed longitudinally from birth to adulthood. Each child was examined in terms of experiencing abuse/neglect during childhood. In addition, Caspi looked at the MAOA gene. A dysfunctional MAOA gene has been linked to impulse control, hence people with this gene variation are more likely to be aggressive/violent (diathesis). Caspi found that genes alone did not result in antisocial behaviour in adulthood, and childhood abuse alone was not enough to guarantee aggression/violence. On the other hand, children who experienced both a dysfunctional MAOA gene and childhood abuse were the ones who went on to suffer. 


Research by Caspi is one of the most famous studies in relation to the Diathesis-stress Model as it provided one of the empirical pieces of evidence of the gene and environment interaction. The research clearly displayed how a genetic vulnerability (dysfunctional MAOA) and an external stressor (abuse) combine to increase susceptibility to aggressive/violent behaviour in adulthood.


Conclusion of the Diathesis-stress Model


The Diathesis-stress Model is a fascinating concept, which provides a strong framework for how specific behaviours are formed. For decades psychologists have tried to explain human behaviour using a nature or nurture cause alone. This is an overly simplistic approach and humans are complex beings, consequently the Diathesis-stress Model is a far more reflective approach to explaining behaviour. Arguing that behaviour is due to genetics or environment alone is in the past, modern explanations that acknowledge these two factors in conjunction are far more powerful and provide a more complete picture of human behaviour.

In Psychology the Sunk-cost Fallacy is a type of cognitive bias in which people continue to pursue an endeavour, due to the fact that they have already invested heavily into it, regardless of if it is a good decision or not.


The Sunk-cost Fallacy often leads to individuals making irrational decisions because they factor in their previous investments, e.g. time and effort, when deciding on a rational outcome. The issue with this approach is that the investment is in the past and impossible to recover, hence it should not be used to justify current decisions.


Why does the Sunk-cost Fallacy occur?


The reason that the Sunk-cost Fallacy is so prevalent in our lives is because humans often allow emotions to influence decisions, leading to irrational outcomes. A potential reason for why the Sunk-cost fallacy occurs is because of the human desire for consistency. If we have previously made a choice, it is likely that we will follow through with the choice even if it is clearly incorrect, in order to facilitate our need to appear consistent to ourselves and also others around us.


Another explanation for the Sunk-cost Fallacy is loss aversion, which refers to the concept that the impact of a loss feels much worse than the impact of a win. As a result, it is common that individuals will aim to avoid a loss, rather than seeking out a win. The larger the investment into a choice, then the greater the loss will be, as more time and effort will be wasted. Due to loss aversion people often choose to carry on endeavours that they know are harmful in the long-term, simply because they want to avoid the feeling of a loss. 


Examples of the Sunk-cost Fallacy?


The Sunk-cost Fallacy can be seen in a variety of real-world examples. Firstly, it can be seen when making career choices. A large portion of people find themselves in a job or career pathway, e.g. higher education, that they no longer enjoy. However, they continue to pursue the pathway that they have previously chosen due to the time and effort that they have already invested into it. Consequently, people continue to live a life that they are not fully satisfied with. In addition, the longer someone stays in a job/career that they do not enjoy, the more investment is made, which makes it even more difficult to change.


Another good example of the Sunk-cost Fallacy can be seen in relationships. People often use previous investment as a justification for remaining in a relationship which is not satisfactory. People might remain in an unhappy relationship that yields no benefits, because the psychological loss of leaving the relationship outweighs the struggles of the relationship.  


The Sunk-cost Fallacy is also highly applicable to the field of investing, e.g. stock market or properties. For example, an investor may continue placing money into a failing stock because they have already invested heavily into it and wish for it to succeed. Subsequently, the investor will continue to pour their money into an unprofitable investment, leading to an even larger loss. The rational decision would be to accept the loss and reallocate resources, e.g. money and research, into a different investment opportunity. 


A final example of the Sunk-cost Fallacy can be seen in political decisions. Governments may continue to fund projects which are ineffective just because they have invested heavily into it, and wish for it to succeed. For example, the government may initiate a new megaproject such as a railway expansion. However, the costs of resources may increase as the project is being built, leading to expenses outside of the government budget. Regardless, the government may continue to invest into the project due to large amounts of previous investment.


How to Overcome the Sunk-cost Fallacy?


It is very difficult to overcome cognitive biases such as the Sunk-cost Fallacy. On the other hand, being aware of the Sunk-cost Fallacy is one of the best ways to challenge poor decisions, based on irrational justification, e.g. previous investment. Awareness can be used to restructure the mind to base decisions on current and future costs, rather than making choices based on the past. 


A potential way to reduce the effects of the Sunk-cost Fallacy is to use objective and reliable data as a justification for decisions. This will reduce reliance on emotional decision-making, and should result in more rational decisions. For example, an investor should aim to look at objective data regarding their investments, rather than continuing to invest just because they wish for their investment to succeed. 


Another way to avoid falling into the Sunk-cost Fallacy trap is a sort of cognitive restructuring. Individuals should avoid viewing a shift in decisions as a loss/quitting, rather it should be viewed as a strategic redirection which will ensure a positive trajectory. This view of decision-making will reduce the chances of remaining in a venture which provides limited progression, as the psychological feeling of loss is not as powerful. 


Is the Sunk-cost Fallacy always Bad?


After reading the majority of this post, you may be under the impression that the Sunk-cost Fallacy always lead to detrimental outcomes. However, this may not be entirely true as the Sunk-cost Fallacy can be applied to force good outcomes. For example, imagine you spent a large amount of time/effort to discover a new diet plan. You are more likely to follow through with the diet plan if you have invested heavily into it. Hence, the Sunk-cost Fallacy can be reframed in a way which has positive implications also.

What is Reductionism in Psychology: Definition, Examples and Evaluation

A question that I frequently contemplate is if a single factor, such as a gene variation, can determine a behavioural outcome, or can a behaviour only be explained via the combination of multiple factors interacting together?

This question lies at the heart of the reductionism versus holism debate. Specifically the focus in this post will be around the reductionist side of the argument, analysing the benefits and drawbacks of this approach, alongside the role it has played in Psychology as an academic discipline. 

What is the Definition of Reductionism?


Reductionism in Psychology refers to explaining behaviour and internal mental processes by breaking them down into simpler components, rather than taking all facets of the behaviour into account. There are multiple different branches of reductionism, such as biological reductionism, environmental reductionism, machine reductionism, and more. 


The opposite of reductionism is holism. Holism argues that a behaviour should not be explained via fundamental constituents, instead it should acknowledge multiple factors and how they interact. For example, a holistic explanation for aggression would combine factors such as genetics, thought processes, past trauma, and current life stressors. 


Examples of Reductionism?


An example of biological reductionism would be explaining behaviour via a biological source, such as a genetic variation. For example, aggressive behaviour may be attributed to a dysfunctional MAOA gene, which is a simplified component and ignores the role of other influential factors. This biologically reductionist approach disregards the role that environment, cognition, and socio-cultural factors likely have in outcomes, such as aggressive behaviour. 


Environmental reductionism occurs when researchers attempt to explain behaviour via external environmental influences while ignoring the role of other factors, e.g. biology and cognition. A good example of this is phobia development. The reductionist approach suggests that the phobia is learned via a stimulus-response blueprint, which ignores the uniqueness of each individual and how they may respond to specific events throughout life.


Another example of reductionism can be seen in cognitive psychology. Machine reductionism refers to the concept of understanding a complex internal system/behaviour by making direct comparisons to the components of a machine. A good example of this is memory being compared to a computer model. For example, the long-term memory and a hard drive, as they can both store large amounts of data for long periods. This approach may be useful, however it is overly simplistic as it fails to account for other variables, e.g. emotional and social factors, which may also play a role in how information is stored. 


What are the Positives of the Reductionist Approach?


On first glance the majority of readers would think that the reductionist approach is inferior to the holistic approach as it is overly simplistic and unreflective of human behaviour. On the other hand, reductionism has many benefits which makes it a very useful approach to use in psychological research. 


The main benefit of reductionism is that it has scientific rigour, the breaking down of complicated behaviours means that they can be tested in a scientific way. This provides an advantage over the holistic approach as researchers may find it hard to isolate variables and assess which factors are most influential in the specific behaviour. 


In addition, the reductionist approach has great practical application for the development of therapies and treatments. For example, the breaking down of mental health conditions to a sole explanation, such as serotonin imbalance, has allowed for the development of SSRIs which have been proven to be highly effective.


What are the Negatives of the Reductionist Approach?


As mentioned previously, a common issue with the reductionist approach is that it is overly simplistic which means that it may not be reflective of human behaviour, which is complex and unpredictable. As a result, the holistic approach may be superior as it provides a more nuanced explanation of human behaviour, which is more applicable to everyday life. 


Another issue with reductionism is that much of the research into isolated variables uses highly controlled laboratory experiments. The main issue with the use of laboratory experiments is that they may be unreflective of how human beings actually operate in the real world, due to the artificial setting/tasks. For example, a task such as recalling a list of irrelevant words has limited personal salience, hence the behaviour reflected in the experiment may not be fully representative. 


Conclusion of Reductionist Approaches in Psychology


Reductionist approaches and explanations certainly have their flaws, however reductionism has helped Psychology substantially in terms of developing as a scientific academic discipline. The absence of reductionism would make it difficult to determine cause-effect relationships between variables and behaviour, and without it certain treatments/therapies would not exist. Hence, there is no doubt that this approach is useful, however it should be used with caution to avoid over simplifying behaviour to a point at which the explanation is extreme and unrealistic.
